5 Adventurous Outdoor Activities in and Around Johannesburg

In Johannesburg, and itching to get outside and go on an adventure?

Whether you're in the mood for a quick day trip, an exhilarating adventure or some family-friendly fun - the City of Gold and surrounds has plenty to offer!

Here are some of the best outdoor activities to do in and around Johannesburg!

Hennops River Hiking Trail

Only a 45-minute drive from Johannesburg, Hennops is home to one of the best hiking trails in Gauteng.

Before you start any of the three hikes, you'll cross a suspension bridge over the Hennops River, or you can use the cable car.

Here are the routes at Hennops:

  • Tackle the 2.5 Dassie walk (perfect for kids or adults who want a leisurely stroll).
  • Explore the 6.1km Zebra route.
  • Conquer the 11.3km Krokodilberg route.

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens

For a retreat away from the bustle of the city, make your way to the spectacular Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens.

Situated near Clearwater Mall, it's a serene slice of wilderness, and its star attraction is the impressive Witpoortjie Waterfall.

Pack a picnic and wander around the gardens, or hike to the top of the waterfall.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the pair of resident eagles who have a nest on the waterfall's cliff face!

Magalies Canopy Tour

For thrill-seekers from Johannesburg, drive out to the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour.

It's an easy 90-minute drive on the highway and is set in the world's second-oldest mountain range.

The adventure will give you a bird's eye view of the area, and you might spot zebra, impala, and wildebeest as you zip across the landscape.

The ten zip lines go up as high as 300-meters above the canopy floor, and the activity is also wheel-chair friendly!

Rosemary Hill Farm

Rosemary Hill is a wonderful day trip from Johannesburg. Only a short drive from Pretoria East, the farm is home to a delicious restaurant, as well as horse riding, walking and mountain biking trails.

You can hire bikes from the coffee shop and spend the whole day exploring the farm.

But if you truly want to experience the magic of Rosemary Hill, check into one of the on-site A-frame cabins. The sunsets here are spectacular, and you'll have more time to explore the farm.

Dinokeng Game Reserve

Dineokeng is a Big 5 private game reserve near Johannesburg.

Day visitors can explore the self-drive route through the reserve. Stop at the bird hides for a chance to see animals at the watering holes and have a braai at one of the picnic sites.

If you'd rather have a guide show you around, guided game drives are available, or you can experience the bush on foot with a walking safari.

For something unforgettable, book the hot air balloon safari. It starts at sunrise (so you'll need to stay over) and you'll have an incredible view over the bush and wildlife.
